The IRS can Revoke your Passport!
A lot of people do not realize that the IRS can revoke your passport. I know for a fact that the IRS can do this, and I personally know of people who have found this out the hard way. One was prevented from going to his daughter’s wedding because he didn’t know it was revoked UNTIL HE ARRIVED AT THE AIRPORT to fly to the wedding in Europe! How awful. How disappointing. It’s bad enough to miss the wedding, but how horrible it is to have to explain to everyone that was expecting you why you weren’t able to come. He called us too late. We were able to get the passport reinstated, but he literally missed his plane and missed the ceremony. I had another married couple that found out just before their summer vacation with their son that their passport was revoked. They had promised a summer vacation as a treat for his graduation. They received a notice from the IRS that the passport was revoked due to back taxes. In this case, we were able to get the passport reinstated before the trip, but how stressful to them. And they also were embarrassed to have to explain the situation to their son as to why the delays.
The IRS has been able to revoke passports for a long time. However, it wasn’t until Covid that the IRS started actually enforcing it on a much wider scale. Now it’s fairly common.
